Being a Vegetarian and Vegan are two different things. First of all, let us understand the difference. Vegetarians are the ones who do not eat animals whereas the Vegans are those who avoid animal products.
It’s not that easy to be a Vegan as you will have to ditch many of your favorite food items but still you will get to consume some of them and adding to it OREO is one of them.
Now, the question arises are Oreos Vegan?
Firstly, let us understand what kind of products used in the making of Oreos? On the packaging we can read some of the ingredients that are unbleached enriched flour, sugar, palm and/or canola oil, cocoa, high fructose corn syrup, leavening agent, corn starch, salt, soy lecithin, vanillin, and chocolate.
The above list of ingredients does not include any form of animal or dairy product which sums up that the Oreos are Vegan.
PETA, on May 6, 2018, came up with a tweet addressing, “ It’s true, #Oreos are #vegan! Did you know all these other snacks are too? #NationalOreoDay.” The debate did not end here as the social media raised a lot of questions regarding the existence of corn syrup, palm oil, etc. Answering to the queries PETA replied, “Generally, we don’t promote foods containing palm oil. We occasionally make exceptions to show the public how easy it can be to find foods that are free of animal-derived ingredients.”
Despite all the studies the FAQ section of Oreo’s U.K. site do not consider Oreo to be Vegan. A question has been asked on the site as “Is Oreo suitable for Vegans?” to which the reply has been mentioned stating, “No, Oreo has milk as cross-contact and therefore are not suitable for vegans.”
Cross contact implies that a segment of product may come into contact with other product during creation. Two distinct items might be made on a similar machine and consequently Oreos can connect with items with milk at the base.
Albeit a few bloggers needed more explanations and proceeded to approach the US group of Oreo for the equivalent and found a similar solution. In addition, Mondalez International, the parent organization of Oreo additionally acknowledged that Oreos are not vegan.
